Arsenal's Gabriel banned after admitting FA improper conduct charge

Arsenal defender Gabriel has been banned for one match after admitting an FA charge of improper conduct. The defender was charged for refusing to leave the field promptly when he was dismissed by referee Mike Dean after a confrontation with Diego Costa during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Arsenal last weekend.The player, who requested a personal hearing, was also fined £10,000 and warned as to his future conduct. Following the game, Costa, meanwhile, was found guilty of violent conduct and banned for three matches following a clash with Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny.

In addition, both clubs were charged with failing to control their players during the game and had until 6pm on Thursday to respond. Arsenal 0-1 Swansea: Bafetimbi Gomis' late winner ends Gunners' unbeaten run

Bafetimbi Gomis’ late header grabbed Swansea an unlikely 1-0 victory at Arsenal to move just one point behind Southampton in the race for the Europa League.

Arsene Wenger is looking to lead his side to their highest Premier League finish in 10 years but their chances were dealt a blow as Gomis' 85th-minute header crossed the line, despite David Ospina's attempt to claw it away.

Arsenal protested the ball had not gone in but referee Kevin Friend, aided by goal-line technology, was in no doubt as the goal stood to send Swansea to victory.

Garry Monk’s side, who are now well in with a chance of Europa League qualification with two games remaining, also had former Arsenal goalkeeper Lukas Fabianski to thank for their victory as he made a string of excellent saves in the second half.

In particular, a fine double save from Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott helped send the Gunners to a first league defeat in 10 and hand Swansea only their second league double over Arsenal.

For the first time in Wenger’s reign he named the same starting line-up for the fifth consecutive Premier League game after Aaron Ramsey was passed fit following a leg injury.

And Arsenal tried to start in the same vein that has seen them win nine of their last 10 league games as Ramsey combined with Mesut Ozil and Hector Bellerin before clipping a cross to Olivier Giroud, who headed over from 10 yards.

Monk had set up to hit Arsenal on the break and it nearly worked as Ashley Williams’s long pass nearly dropped into the path of Nathan Dyer, but Ospina was quickly off his line to head the ball to safety.

Arsenal were trying to pass their way through but it was to Swansea’s credit that all the hosts could muster was Giroud’s curled effort from 25 yards which flew wide of Fabianski’s goal.

The former Arsenal man would have been expecting a busier night but the Gunners failed to register a single shot on target in the first half. However, with 21 of the last 22 goals in this fixture in all competitions coming in the second half of the match, Wenger would have been pleading for patience from his troops and a much improved performance.

And that is what he got as Arsenal probed to make the breakthrough with Bellerin breaking free down the right before crossing for Giroud, but he was beaten to the ball by Federico Fernandez.

Giroud was again in the action in the 59th minute but the impressive Fabianki was in the way, getting down well to his right to make a smart save.

Wenger sent for reinforcements in Jack Wilshere and Walcott and the latter could have made an instant impact when sending Bellerin’s cross goalwards, but Fabianski was well positioned to keep his goal intact.

Ramsey also tested his former team-mate but the keeper's best moment came in the 78th minute as he first denied Sanchez from close range and then got up to keep Walcott’s effort out.

It got even better for Swansea with just five minutes remaining as Gomis struck the only goal of the match.

The Frenchman was the matchwinner when the two sides met earlier in the season and he was a thorn in Arsenal’s side again as he rose to head Jefferson Montero’s shot over the line. Ospina got across to claw the ball away but it was not enough as Friend awarded the goal with the help of goal line technology.

It sent Arsenal crashing to their first defeat in 10 league matches as they bid to finish in second place behind champions Chelsea. Wenger’s men, who stay third, are now three points behind Manchester City with a game in hand but face Manchester United, who are just two points behind, at the weekend.

Victory moves Swansea, who are a point behind Southampton in seventh and two points behind Tottenham in sixth, firmly into the race for the Europa League as they became the first side to complete a league double against Arsenal this season.

Arsenal need to end poor run against Chelsea , says Jamie Carragher

In his weekly column, Sky Sports' football expert Jamie Carragher looks ahead to a big double header on Super Sunday.

Manchester United will be looking to bounce back from their defeat at Chelsea when they travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton, who have hit form of late, going five Premier League games unbeaten.

Then it's a big clash at the top of the table as Arsenal host Chelsea, with Jose Mourinho's side knowing victory at the Emirates Stadium would mean they could seal the title against Leicester on Wednesday.

CARRA SAYS: Obviously Arsene Wenger is going to say it isn’t that big a thing, but I’m sure it’s in the back of his mind. You don’t want a record like that against anyone.

I’m sure it gives confidence to Chelsea and Mourinho that they can get one over on Arsenal, not just in this particular game but obviously in the future, because there are always teams you come up against where – no matter what you do or try – you always find it difficult to beat them.

Mourinho has that wherever he’s been. Very few teams do beat him, so it’s not just Arsenal and Arsene Wenger who have that record – there will be plenty of managers.

Arsene Wenger will know, if they want to compete and win trophies, Chelsea and Mourinho are going to be in the way so they have to start taking points off them.

You could argue that it’s not mathematically out of Arsenal’s hands if they win but his game could, from Arsenal’s point of view if they won, give them more belief for next season than actually do damage to Chelsea this season.

CARRA SAYS: They mustn’t make mistakes. Chelsea are the most ruthless team in the league – they capitalise on other teams’ mistakes. That will be very important from Arsenal’s point of view.

Chelsea rarely make mistakes themselves. Defensively they’re always very strong, always very solid. You just can’t afford to switch off at any time against this Chelsea team because they punish you.

At times we’ve seen Arsenal do that, but I’m sure Wenger and the Arsenal squad are going to be really focused and concentrated on that game.

That will be the big thing, though – make any mistakes at the back and they’ll be punished.

Juventus will take a narrow lead to Monaco for their Champions League last-eight second leg after Arturo Vidal's penalty split the sides in Turin.

Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco wasted a clear opening for the visitors before Carlos Tevez fluffed a volley for Juve.

Vidal, who had blazed over just before the break, then blasted home an emphatic penalty following Ricardo Carvalho's trip on Alvaro Morata.

Dimitar Berbatov headed just over but Monaco were mostly kept at bay.

Leonardo Jardim, the Principality side's manager, claimed that the result was a "big injustice" with the decisive spot-kick "inexistent".

Repeated viewings suggested Carvalho tripped Morata fractionally outside the penalty area, but it would be hard to blame referee Pavel Kralovec on such a marginal call.

Juventus might also have argued that as the last defender, Carvalho was fortunate to see only yellow for the foul.

Monaco had enough chances to return home level, regardless of the official's decision.

In the first 10 minutes Ferreira-Carrasco was put through by Anthony Martial but contrived to shot straight at Gianluigi Buffon with space yawning on either side of the Juventus goalkeeper.

Likewise, Buffon would have been helpless had Berbatov kept his late header down and the Italy keeper had to be alert to turn over the impressive Geoffrey Kondogbia's stinging drive.

However, Juventus also missed chances to build a bigger advantage with Vidal, Carlos Tevez and Alvaro Morata all wasteful in front of goal.

Monaco have conceded only eight goals in their nine Champions League matches so far this season, but they will need more than stout defence to wrest the tie back in their favour when the teams meet again on 22 April.

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri: "It was a good result. Not conceding a goal at home gives us a small advantage. Monaco are a very-well organised team."
